Short in 8n

I am having trouble with my 8N running smoothly and have narrowed in down to a short or poor connection in my ignition wiring. As I was searching my wiring yesterday I noticed that there is a bolt above the ammeter where several"hots" come together (they are fastened to the bolt as a junction). This bolt or screw I noticed was getting extremely hot when I hit the starter for more than a few seconds. Can anyone tell me why a bolt used as a junction would heat up like that??????
