Massey Ferguson 500-406

Hello Group,

I am looking at a MF 500-406 w/front loader and davis 220 backhoe. Its in pretty ugly shape and has a bunch of leaking hoses. Its a gasoline engine Continental I am told. My question is he is asking $2000. Which I realize is a good price but how do I access the condition of the unknowns. I can check compression, but how do I check the tranie? All the implements work but leaks oil. I am mechanically inclined and willing to do some work but am I getting over my head here? I can send a pic if anyone want to see it.
Appreciate any help, I cant seem to find any info on this model
