The things necessary for good soldering are 1: Compatible materials and solder. Copper and brass solder easily with any tin-lead solder. Iron and steel are a little harder. 2:A suitable flux. Copper and brass work good with a rosin flux. Iron and steel generally need acid flux. 3: Clean surfaces. This is where most problems happen. Scraping to shiny metal is probably best. If the surfaces have been soldered before, melting the solder and wiping it with a clean rag is good. If there is any dirt, corrosion, oil, etc., the solder will not stick. 4: Proper heat. The metal must be hot enough for the solder to melt when applied. Do not put the solder in the torch flame. Too much heat will oxidize the metal and burn the flux and solder. Practice on some copper tubing.
