Yes, you used the wrong oil. Whether that is causing the smoking remains to be seen, as others have stated below. My 2 cents, always use detergent oil - - DO NOT follow old Operator's manuals, because they were written for oil products at that time. Almost all gas or deisel tractors will do fine on the new 15W40 oils made for diesels. My preference is Mobil Delvac 1300, but you can also use Shell Rotella.
Remember money spent on high quality oil is the cheapest money you will ever spend on a tractor.
