Another way of looking at it is: Lets say the tractor is rated at 12 HP hours per gallon. The tractor engine would do the same amount of work in one hour , useing one gallon of fuel , as 12 horses would do in one hour. So , if the engine can produce the work of 16 horses useing only one gallon of fuel , that would be considered better fuel economy than the engine only produceing the work of 12 horses per hour , useing one gallon of fuel.
