Jon's advice is right on. A 20 amp full scale ammeter will peg on an alternator system until the battery is 100% charged.

If you have an accurate voltmeter stick it across the battery terminals. If it reads less than about 14.5 volts with the engine running at speed and the alternator pegged, there is no problem. If it shows greater than 15 volts, either the sense wire (#2 connection at the alternator) is open, or the internal regulator has failed.
