This is such an interesting coversation! I don't know if you know much about radials (I don't know alot of the specifics), but the Wright Cyclones used in B-17s had the following air intake system (just like the Allison): Exhaust driven G.E. supercharger, which pushed air through to an intercooler, then to the carb, then to the crankshaft driven blower! All that pressure was finally dumped in the 9 cylinders. Times four engines! About 1200 hp each. They needed all the power they could get to cruise at 20,000 feet with a bombload. Even to get off the ground! Didn't the P-38 use oil to regulate the superchargers? I think I remember that there was a problem with them getting unresponsive when the oil got thick when cold. The B-17s had the same problem, until the late G models got an electric system to control them. I'd better quit annoying ya now. Feel free to email me. Brandon (the B-17 nut, and John Deere too)
