My father used to put home built water injection systems on his automobiles back in the forties and fifties. He was able to run a leaner fuel mixture for better gas mileage. This was something he learned from racing motorcycles as he had noticed that you could run a smaller main jet or a leaner mixture on a humid day without the engine running hot. In the winter he added alcohol to keep it from freezing.
