The one area that i've got a complaint with Howard rotavators is their paint! All (3) of mine have paint that is pi$$ poor!!
I had a guy tell me he painted his with "Chevy" engine orange, and it looked very good! I never saw the finished product, but i'm tempted to do the same, "if" i ever paint one. Some of the paint on my small one came off in small sheets with in a year of me buying it!! My bigger ones have faded quite badly.
I've seen cans of Howard paint at my dealer, but i never bought any of it. I will have to say, mine have "no" rust on them, even though the paint sucks, and they sit out in the weather a lot!
Howards are built to last, and they do, so don't be surprised when you see their parts prices!! I think they make up for the few parts they sell!
You really don't need any pressure to hold your back doors shut, so the chain works just fine. It's there to hold the door "open" when that option it needed, and i don't see any reason why you can't use yours with a chains too.
I'm posting the link to my Howard dealer. Get ahold of Peter in parts, he can get you anything you want for your HR20. They have been a Howard dealer for over 25 years. Have the serial number handy when you call.
Are any rotor blades missing??
"Don't" reuse any of the bolts that hold them on!! "Don't" buy cheapo bolts, like from TSC ect.. "Don't" use loc washers!!
Buy bolts from a "bolt dealer", or maybe a tractor dealer. Use nothing less than grade 8 bolts, and use loc-nuts! The crimpted ones are better than nylocs. I always use red loc-tite along with the loc-nuts. I don't torque the nuts, but i put them on d@m tight!!
The HR20 could use 7/16" or 1/2" diameter bolts?? There were two blade sizes offered with the HR20, some have the heavier HR30 blades, some don't. Heavier blades use the 1/2" bolts.
I learned all of the above the hard way!! Hope it helps you. :)
