If it's pumping, it ain't running backwards! The design of a centrifugal impeller is such that it only works one way. I suspect they got the fittings on the suction and discharge ports reversed. Are the ports marked? Are they the same size, with one bushed down for the 5/8" discharge line? If so, just swap the bushings, and you're all set.
