Noise from the rear axle - JD2030 - Any ideas?

I've got a John Deere 2030 (Mannheim)that has been making a loud intermittent clanking noise from the rear axle area. It has been getting worse and I haven't been able to isolate the problem yet. It seems to make the noise mostly when I start up or let off on the accelerator, but it makes it occasionally at other random times too. It comes from one side or the other, but not both at the same time. If I apply a single brake, it does seem to affect it and it seems that I can make it happen. Any ideas? Here's hoping it's the brakes and not the differential!
