You are allowed up to 26000# gross before you are required to have a CDL. There is one hitch to this though. You cannot exceed the manufactures maximum weight rating for the towing vehicle. Most of the scales have the weight charts for all trucks, pickups included. You will also have to have the vehicles registered accordingly. If you only have 7000# tags on your truck and 5000# tags on the trailer you are limited to 12000# total. So if you do get stopped with 26000# on, you are 10000# overweight, this will be a fairly hefty ticket. The same holds for grossing 26000#, and the manufacturers maximum towing capacity is 18500#(truck, trailer, and load) you are 7500# overweight. And if you tag your pick-up 10000#, you DO have to stop for all scales, they may wave you through, but you do have to go through them. This may all sound stupid, but it is the law, Im speaking from $1875. worth of experience.
