most alternators need to have 12 volts initially to them to excite them. This is typically done by idiot light in dash, provides 12 volts then when alternator starts the light goes out due to 12+ volt on both sides of light. If you turn the alternator fast enough it will self excite and then will work at low speeds until turned off. If light bulb burns out will not charge. Learned this the hard, hard, hard way. Exceptially dense that weekend!!
