Hydraulics Problem

I just purchased a fairly nice MF-204 with a front loader. The loader has a lot of jerking when lifting so I pulled the front grill and checked the hydraulic oil filter. It was really dirty so I cleaned it and reinstalled it and now the pump blows all the oil back into the reservoir and won't lift the bucket. What did I do wrong?? I topped off the filter can before replacing the lid and tried this several times but always get the same result. All the oil goes into the reservoir and eventually blows out of the breather.
