You could do like we do on the gear boxes of bush hogs when the seal goes to leaking grease. We pump in a tube of high pressure chassis grease and finish filling up with gear grease 140. This stays in a good while. I know what you mean by not wanting to replace if you don't have to on someting you don't use often
