The bearing is graphite. supposedly, the grease fitting is to allow the bearing to saturate with grease. One or two shots at a time is all it takes. Bates makes an actual bearing to replace this set-up and it is a great improvement. Although, you can't argue too much with a system that has lasted 37 years. There's many more out there older than that.
