I believe that during the later depression years and during the war that IH dealers offered a tractor restoration/refurbishing service for farmers who wanted to spruce up their tractors a bit. In many cases, I think this could have included a new, red paint job. Not sure where I remember reading an article about this, but IH had a display they would take around to county fairs, etc. that showed a tractor half restored so the farmers could see the "before and after" before making their decision. But surely, many farmers just repainted red so it would look newer.
