Oil Filters

Folks: While looking through some of my dad's old Popular Science, and Popular Mechanics magazines from the 50's, I saw ads for a "Sintered Bronze Ball" cone type filter. Apparently, it filtered better, had less pressure drop, and only needed to be washed in gas or solvent for re-use. They were touted as the best kind of filter you could get then. Why are they not seen any more? Is it price, or weren't they as good as advertised? Are they still available now? If so, where from? Thanks, all.
