Sand in the Carburetor

I have an old 8N 195x Ford tractor. It will start up but then will sputter and go out on its own. It floods itself and we cannot get it started again. We got it a carburetor kit and installed it. It made alittle difference. It stays on now for a while longer but again will sputter and cut out and you can smell its flooded again. In installing the carburetor kit, we found alot of sand in the carburetor. Is replacing it the only solution? I suppose I need to also clean out the gas tank?
I really have not looked yet how hard that is. Any suggestions? Or advise as to what else I should look out for? Thanks alot! We about have this tractor going. Mary
