I agree that it sounds like a jammed starter drive. If it doesn't release by tapping the starter and you can't turn the engine, just loosen the starter attaching bolts a bit and it should unjam. Definitely find out why this is happening so major damage to the starter, ring gear, or even the block doesn't happen.
