I have been farming and driving tractors for a long time but for the past 7 years I have lived and farmed in Virginia where you only go up or down hill. Aside from the other good advice you were given, I would:
1. Keep your breaks in good working order.
2. Never push the clutch in when going up or down hill, especially down.
3. Look over the area on foot before going on it with a tractor and look for obstacles, i.e. rocks, holes, etc.
4. If you drive at an angle to the slope, you are better off.
5. If it feels too steep and looks too steep it is probably too steep for you.
