misused Int 3414 backhoe transmission

Has anyone had experience with a Int. 3414 tranny, that jumps out of any gear you put it in. Sometimes the tractor will move other times it won't. The owner said it stuck in 4th and he pulled the cover to get it out. Since then the go/ no go, problem. [I don't know if that's true or a story to sell the tractor].
The price is right if it's not a major problem, but if the tranny is just worn out from misuse, the price isn't right
