Connecting a 12V battery to your 6V battery is not good for the battery or the coil. This could have damaged the battery and the coil. Other posts have given decent advice on how to jump-start with 12V if really needed.

As for the coil, does the distributor mount on the front surface of the engine or on the side? If it's a front-mount distributor, there should be a resistor under the dash to limit the current through the coil. If somebody has removed this resistor (sometimes done in search of hotter sparks), the coil will get too much current and will eventually be damaged. This would fit real well with your statement that you've now had two coils fail.

If it's a side-mount distributor, there's no resistor to worry about.
