It could be the detent spring is stuck or broken, It could be the gears in the tansmission have been scrapped when shifted into gear and worn off making it slip out of gear. This is what if sounds like is wrong with it as it slips out while pulling. You can pull the top cover and take a look inside to see. If its a gear you have to disassamble the trans.
