My company had Mr. Deming on retainer during most of the 80's. He was 80+ at that time. He looked terrible, couldn't hear, said very little and was obviously coached by his wife in everything he said. I got the feeling that if he died, they would not announce it, just have him stuffed and continue wheeling him around. He was a figurehead or a franchise when I saw him. I saw him once a month for 2 years. Most of these consultants have very little new to add, and usually are chosen to justify some action that mgt. wants to do anyway. I feel a lot of industrial engineering work is done this way, the numbers are determined by mgt. and then the consultants justify them. Sometimes wall street determines the course of action. 27 year old investment bankers making 2 million a year saying publicly that the 40,000 per year workers are over paid! my 2c. Irv
