Grubbing tongs work OK, but I've usually just used a logging chain with a slip hook- it will also tighten as you pull, and less monkey business than trying to keep the tongs from slipping off the root/ sapling as you tighten up, etc. ("slip" hook has opening slightly larger than diameter of a chain link, so it slips over the chain. "Grab" hook has narrower opening, so it "grabs" between links and won't move). Grubbing tongs are most handy when you can't get a chain around what you're trying to pull. You'll also find that if you can't get a chain around it, you probably can't pull it out anyhow.
