Typically, cracking is caused by one of three things: Water freezing in the water jacket, uneven torquing or fatigue of the head, or improper cooling after extended use.

I suspect yours is from the first. At some point it may have been left out in freezing weather without proper coolant protection.

The second is due to expansion and contraction after years of heating/cooling cycles, sometimes caused by an internal fault in the casting that finally fails.

An example of the third would be the tendency of early IH gas/diesel heads to crack if not cooled down properly after working the tractor.
