Guessing the magnetic coil gave out? I had the same problem with a clutch on a Deere 140. If I remember right, the thing cost $250, and came only as a whole kit. What happened to mine was that the coil was in a metal bowl shaped like a jello mold. The coil was potted in what looked like epoxy and sand, and over the years, the potting mixture broke down, allowing the coil to come in contact with moving parts. I was able to remove coil and other material from the bowl, sand blasted the inside to make it clean, and roughen the surface. Then I determined the size of the wire, and number of turns. Made up a cardboard form and wound a new coil with a few extra turns for good measure. (Wire available from any electric motor shop.) Wrapped it in several places to hold it together with packaging tape. Used a couple tubes of epoxy cement from the hardware store to secure the new coil. Covered the surface of the coil with a plastic bag and a couple of sandbags to hold everything in place until epoxy set. Has worked fine for several years! Cost - less than $10.
