I have heard that heated apple vinegar works really well, although I've never tried it. There is a commercial product called CLR that is supposed to dissolve calcium and lime. It seems to work well for some people and terrible for others. You should be able to find it at Wal-Mart or similar stores. It'll be interesting to read other answers!

I've learned it's a good idea to drain and flush a water heater at least once per year, and if you have very hard water, flush it twice a year. It will reduce your water heater bill immensely.

Do you have a water softener? A softener will take calcium/lime out of the water. We have extremely hard water(the water comes out of a limestone-filled aquifer), and the softener has been money well-spent!!
