The fact that it cleared up after driving it at highway speeds for a while leads me to think the engine needs to be run more for longer periods of time with a load to get it warm through and threoug. I would change the oil and filter more often and see that it runs up to temperature, and if it is used for short trips, will it should be taken on a longer trip now and then to boil out condensation and help prevent sludge. Short easy trips aren't short easy trips as far as an engine is concerned and cool running isn't cool either, it wants to run at 200 degrees more or less.
