MH 44D Broken crank commom problem? Help!

Hi I have just bought a 1947 44-6 and now have been offered a 44D. The 44-6 need a lot of help. My dad and I farmed with a 44D for a short time before the crank broke. Is this a common problem? I live in Maine and also wondered how easy they start in the winter using a block heater. This tractor will be used not just for show. I need your help experienced Masssey people.
