The Sherman aux tranny was a dealer added option until about the time your tractor was built. It then became a factory option on the 641 and 841. Those with factory installed shermans were designated 841-S or 641-S. Could that "-8" possibly be a "-S"? The diamond means cast iron sleeves (as opposed to steel sleeves). The displacement of the engine (172 cu in) is based on the diameter of the sleeve. You could get more inches by not using sleeves and putting in oversize pistons, but this is generally considered to be a bad idea. Worn out sleeves can be replaced. A worn out block is toast.
