Coil problem, I think

The 300U died on my son yesterday. He said there was no spark. Unfortunately, when I got home today, he had the battery charger hooked up and the switch was on. The coil was so hot I burned my finger on it. Is there a device to check whether a coil is any good? Would a garage likely have such a device? I'll probably buy a new one anyway as I've been told they don't cost much.
Haven't been able to get ahold of any of my mechanic friends.
