To make a cheap tester, take a spark plug and bend back or break off the outer electrode. If the mag is OK, it should be able to fire a spark from the inner electrode to the outer part of the plug. The resistance of air increases with pressure, so the gap the spark will cross decreases as pressure builds on the compression stroke. If it will jump the big gap outside the engine, it should fire the correct gap in the engine.
