Where I live, we are blessed with those sweet creatures. I live pretty far out in the woods and I see them nesting all over the woods every spring. When a large nest is damaged they can repair it very quickly. I noticed them rebuild a nest once in about 25 hours that was knocked out of the tree by a utilities service truck. I don't know if you have the same hornets there where you live as we do here. The ones found here in Mississippi are about a inch and a half long and are not to be messed with. I respect them. I always try to kill he nest's in the dead of winter. I have never seen them nest in the ground here, only in tree's. If you ran over their nest while mowing without being stung I'd say you are a lucky man.
