I believe any spray that will effectively kill the thistles will aslo kill at least one of your 3 'good' plants. Thistles are very difficult to control, you will probably be at it for 3 years. I would suggest spraying to get them, and save the grass. The clover/alfalfa will die. In 2-3 years when the patches are gone, reseed the patches with your mix again.

There are some good fall control chemicals, like Tordon (?sp?), HiDep, Stinger. These are real expensive, but actually soak into the root & do kill the things. As some have said, you need to spray at just the right time.

Roundup at the right time will also do it, but kill everything off.

If you wish to save the alfalfa there are a couple of sprays, but they will probably harm the grass & possibly the clover, and are not as good at killing the thistles, but only surpressing them - to reappear in a year or 2.
