The best advice I can give is to mow the spots with thistles. Hopefully the alfalfa and clover will out grow the weeds. 2,4-D is a volitile chemical and can spread easily in wind, even calm wind. I would not try it, even spot spray, on my alfalfa. Round up spot spray will work great provided the spots to spray are not too big. A rope wick work very well if you can find one. The pressurized type works better but they are a lot more $$$$$$. A suggestion for next sping, before the alfalfa and clover green up, spray a product like prawl or treflan there are also several generic products. You can get this impregnated into dry fertilizer. You can kill two birds with one stone. These will stop the weeds from coming up in your hay.
