The difference between "4WD" and "full time all wheel drive" is the installation of another differential between the front and the rear axles. You could drive either on bare roads all the time if you went straight, no turns. When you turn, the rear wheels track in a smaller radius than the fronts, therefore they are not traveling the same distance as the fronts which causes the binding. Something has to absorb the difference or you twist your drivetrain into a pretzel.
