The problem is that the front and rear axle ratios in a 4WD are different by design. For example I have a Ford 4WD that has 4:10 front and 4:11 rear ratio. This means that when using 4WD on slick roads, the front end is always pulling just a little bit. This keeps the rear end from trying to out run the front end. On the slick roads or surfaces other than bare pavement any pressure that is built up in the system (called "PROP SHAFT WIND-UP") is released by either the front or rear end slipping a little bit. If nothing slips, such as happens on bare pavement or hard surfaces, then things break. I know of instances where transfer cases have actually exploded on dry hard surface roads.
