DJ - Sounds like either a intermittant problem in the starter solenoid switch, or a problem in the starter itself. Try replacing the solenoid switch if possible. At the starter, check for worn brushes, dirty/burned commutator and possibly a worn starter drive (bendix). Problem won't be in the coil resistor. It works independant of the starter, and it's normal for it to get quite hot whenever the ignition is on.
