The design of the exhaust system really controls the noise you hear, and can be easily changed.

As a general rule, underslung exhausts are going to make less noise then upright exhausts, especially when the underslung exhaust is angled down towards the dirt. To help with an upright, angle the exhaust tip forward, away from you.

In both cases, get a decent muffler. This generally will not be a tractor muffler. You'll have to go to an auto store and get one from them. Not only are they typically quieter, but often times they flow better (more power, less gas burned), though they are not usually as robust.

And of course, hearing protection. I personally prefer muffs to plugs.
