Joe: I know there are lots of people uninformed about ear damage. It's amazing how rude they can get when they do not understand. I understand very well. I had one loud explosive sound do severe damage to my left inner ear. Hyperacussis is the medical term along with recrutement that describes the condition. It is very serious and will alter your life without question if severe. I no longer can drive any car without iritation due to the vibrations through the body. Using a hammer or electric hand drill is out of the question due to the vibrations. There is nothing short of having the audio nerve severed making the whole ear deaf that can be done. All this from one loud noise right in front of me. The ringing is terrible 24 hours a day without letup.
Don't pay any attention to the uninformed. Protect yourself from any loud noise. Doc
