Sounds like a fuel pump. A friend has a 98 1500 4x4 and did the similar symptoms. My bosses 96 GMC 1500 would run fine, then after been running a good bit of the day, would cut off when you stopped, and would start up real hard again. Then it got worse, you would drive it around all day, cut it off, then it wouldn't start till the next morning and would run fine. I good check if it does it and won't start, turn the key off, slide under the fuel tank, have someone just turn the key on, you should hear the pump come on for a couple seconds. One suggestion, if you do replace it, get a heavy duty one, both people I did replaced a couple of the cheap ones till they broke down and got an expensive one, no problems since. I'm pretty sure you have to take your bed off and then it comes right out of the top of the tank. Both of these trucks were GMC's, just regular 4x4's, not Z71's, and both only had the 4.3 V6. I imagine they all have the same pumps though, but could be wrong. Hope this helps.
