Agree with all the methods posted, particularly using a hydraulic aid such as a front end loader etc.
Also have used a cut down crow bar and one of the slide-down post bangers as a bead-breaker (as a two man job). The important thing is to get the angle right or you can easily go through the side wall on an old tyre!
Also have also used a jigsaw to cut the tyre all way round the side-wall to recover a good tube and then cut through the bead with an angle grinder - it smokes and smells a bit but works OK.
