Rod - Here's the trick hold the brushes back while you reinstall the end bell:

Take a plain paper clip and straighten it out. Find the small slot near the bearing in the end bell that lines up with a hole in the brush holders. Push the brushes as far as they will go into the holders, then slide the straightened paper clip thru the slot and then thru the holes in the brush holders. The clip wire will hold the brushes retracted in the holders. Now reassemble the end bell and tighten the 3 screws holding the alternator halves together. Finally pull the paper clip back out to release the brushes and you're good to go. ...Bob M
