well here is my two cents i always thought that (synthetic) oils were two expensive. but not anymore I work on a dirt modified race car and we use synthetic oils throughout we ran the engine for 2 seasons (358 chevy 535hp) at times early on before we could get it hooked up to the track the tatletale tac would read 9500 rpm peeks. it was sent back to the engine builder (morisman engines) and it looked the same inside as the day it was built no damage to any parts or vissable ware. then my son's car had a bad gasket on the intake and he didn't know where the antifreze was going and drove it for 2 days after he put in 2 gals it filled the crankcase and wouldn't hardly run. I told him that surly the bearings would be gone but we puled the filter and no bearing peices. so we fixed the gaskets and it has been fine. he was using synthetic oil. now thats all I use. surely its well worth the added cost.
