Use and ohm meter across + and - on the coil with nothing else connected. You should read a resistance. It should not be 10k but it shouldn't read 1 ohm either. Not sure of exact measurement because of the differance in coils. I am guessing at it but 10 up to 100 ohms. Any less and the coil may be shorted. Check a simular coil.

You might get a tingle if you get to close since the meter uses battery voltage to check resistance.
