I haven't used it in a garden, but I have used something from Lowe's that you put in flower beds to keep the weeds out. It's in a roll, and it looks kinda like fabric but it is actually a type of plastic. You roll it out, cut holes in it with a knife for the plants, and put some dirt on it to keep it down. It does a GREAT job choking weeds out, and it lets water through it to your plants. It even has a five-year warranty.
