You might try pouring a little atf in the carb while it is running. ATF is good about breaking down crude. It might help. Try a differant type of oil in the crank case.

Normal wear will change the valve lash. A file on the valve steam would fix that, it should get worse as the engine warms up if you are short on valve lash.

I'm guessing and engine with a burnt valve would be hard to start as the compression would be down.
