Sounds like moisture in the Dist cap. I once saw a six that looked fine. Motor would not go above idle without popping and would get 100 rpms over idle. Sprayed carb cleaner in dist cap, wiped dry, no help. Somebody else walked up and double checked everything on this motor we were putting together, checked timing, fuel, fireing order, valves, then he sprayed wd40 in the dist cap and ir started and reved and ran perfect. Try wd40\\\ Water Displacer #40. If that doesn't work, change the timing + or - to see if the dist shaft/gear might have slipped.
